Baby plant nursery

The first picture is of the shelves by the backdoor ready for starting our baby plants. We can do some of them in 2 days. We can't wait for those first tiny specks of green peeking out of the soil. It's a miracle - those dried up seeds look as if they have no life but soon....
We can't do much outside yet, but Terri did mow the lawn this morning. I do love North Carolina. Lawn mowing seems to go on all year. The second picture is of the nicely mown lawn and the stakes marking the 4 square foot beds...or at least part of them.

Our next steps

Well this week we our organic seeds arrived and we picked up the peat pots and seed starting soil.  We used all our food scraps and started the compost.  The first layer is pine with peat moss and then a layer of our food scraps and topped with another layer of peat moss. We staked out three beds to start with while our dreams are for more we decided to start with just the three.

Our First Day

Today, Elizabeth, Terri, Alice and Holly (four generation) have started our backyard garden. Of course all we have done so far is make our shelves for our seedlings trays and purchase the seeds.  But then it is only January.  We chose as many organic or heirloom seeds as possible.  And then there is the three 2-quart buckets of food scraps that will be the beginning of our compost.
